Women who are petite in height and full-busted know that finding a bra that fits properly and is supportive can be a challenge.
The number one issue is proportion – the correct size bra is frequently too large for your frame. The underwires are too long and poke under your arms. The cups have too much coverage and can end up around your neck. The band is too tall for your shorter torso. The straps don’t have enough adjustment. The bra does not rest against the sternum because the top of the tummy is in the way. IF you’re a plus size petite, here’s what you should look for.
(I like the idea of having two models – one plus-size-petite and the other average height, but both wearing the same bra size. If not, we need a petite plus-size woman wearing the wrong style, then changing her to the right style and a split screen at the end comparing both).
First, avoid bras where there is an underband. This is called an underband, and can make a bra too long for a woman with a petite figure. Instead, look for bras without an underband. (petite model in the bra with underband, then in the one without the underband)
Avoid any bra claiming to be “full coverage.” It’s too much bra for you, and you could find its neckline up around your neck.
Consider a bra with an arched center panel. If your center panel is not resting on your sternum, it’s probably because you have a bit of a high-set tummy. A bra with an arched center panel allows the bra to rest on your sternum while giving your tummy a place to go. It’s a much more comfortable experience – especially when sitting down.
Look for bra styles that have shorter underwires. These include balconette, demi and plunge bras. The underwires are cut shorter, so there is less chance of being poked in your under arms. And these bra styles also have less coverage, which again, is probably a better choice for your petite height.
Fully adjustable straps. Avoid bras where the straps have decoration in front. Look for bras where the adjustability can slide all the way to the top of your cups (I think you have prior animation about this from another video).
Check out our fitter’s comments where we tell you the side height of all our bras. For women shorter than 5’4”, you want to try and stay under a 4” tall side. And, this is also where we tell you if the side has boning or not.
Keep these design elements in mind, and you’ll quickly be able to find the bras that fit you best.
