2-Part Cup

A 2-part cup is constructed from two fabric panels sewn together to shape and support the breast. The seam may run horizontally, diagonally, or vertically, depending on the bra’s design and the shape it is intended to create.

3-Part Cup

A 3-part cup is constructed from three fabric panels, typically with two lower sections and one upper section. This design provides greater shaping, lift, and cup depth than many seamless cups and is commonly found in full-bust and full-figure bras.

4-Part Cup

Acetate

Support varies by style, but most adhesive bras provide less support than bras with a traditional band and straps.

Adjustable Straps

Adjustable straps allow the wearer to customize strap length for a more comfortable and supportive fit. Most bra straps adjust using small sliders, making it possible to position the cups correctly while allowing the band to provide most of the bra's support.

Properly adjusted straps should rest comfortably on the shoulders without digging in or slipping off.

Arched Center Panel

An arched center panel is a bra center panel that curves upward beneath the cups instead of extending straight across the underband. Asymmetrical Breasts

Asymmetrical breasts differ in size, shape, position, or projection. Some degree of breast asymmetry is very common. It can often be accommodated by fitting the larger breast first and adjusting the smaller side with removable inserts, adjustable straps, or flexible cup construction.

Back Closure

Backless

Balconette Bra

Band Riding Up

Band riding up occurs when the back of a bra band sits higher than the front rather than remaining level around the torso. It usually indicates that the band is too loose, too large, overly stretched, or no longer able to provide adequate support.

Band Size

Band size is the numeric portion of a bra size, such as 34 in 34D. It relates to the measurement around the rib cage beneath the breasts but does not represent the unstretched length of the bra band in inches. The band provides most of a bra’s support and should fit snugly and remain level around the body without riding up in the back.

Bandeau Bra

A bandeau bra is a simple band-style bra that wraps around the bust, usually without traditional shaped cups or underwires. Most bandeau bras provide light support and are best suited for smaller busts or casual wear.

Bar Tack

Sewing reinforcement at the end of a slit with short stitching rows perpendicular to the seam.

A bar tack is a series of short, dense stitches used to reinforce high-stress areas of a garment, including bra strap attachments, underwire casings, elastic ends and pocket openings.

Bartack Stitch

A special type of stitch that reinforces areas of stretch with high-density stitches. Appears like a very tight zigzag stitch. A bartack stitch is commonly used in lingerie to seal underwire casings, raw elastic edges, or boning channels as it is one of the most secure stitches possible. Must be performed using a specialized machine and tends to be more expensive and time-consuming.

Basque

A basque is a structured, longline lingerie garment that combines bra cups with a fitted torso and often includes attached garters. Depending on its construction, it may also shape the waist.

Bed Jacket

A bed jacket is a short robe or jacket worn over sleepwear to provide warmth and modesty while sitting up in bed.

Bikini

A bikini panty sits below the natural waist with moderate front and back coverage and medium-width sides. It is one of the most common and versatile panty styles.

Blend

A term applied to a yarn or a fabric that is made up of more than one fiber. In blended yarns, two or more different types of staple fibers are twisted or spun together to form the yarn. Polyester/cotton is an example of a typical blended yarn or fabric.

Boarding

Boarding is a hosiery finishing process in which damp stockings are placed over heated leg forms to create their final shape and improve appearance.

Body Briefer

A body briefer is one-piece shapewear that combines bra support with smoothing through the tummy, waist, back, and sometimes the hips. Many styles include an open gusset or hook-and-eye closure for convenience.

Bodysuit

A bodysuit is a one-piece garment that covers the torso and fastens at the crotch. Bodysuits are available in a wide range of styles, from casual and fashion tops to lingerie and shaping garments. Depending on the design, they may include features such as underwire cups, built-in support, thong or full-coverage backs, and long or short sleeves.

Unlike a body briefer, a bodysuit is not necessarily designed to provide shaping or firm control.

Bonded Fabric

Bonded fabric is created by joining two or more layers using adhesive, heat, pressure, or another bonding process instead of relying only on traditional stitching. Bonded construction can add support, stabilize fabric, reduce bulk, or create smooth edges in lingerie, bras, shapewear, and activewear.

Boning

Boning consists of flexible or rigid strips sewn into a garment to provide structure, support, and shaping. Modern boning is typically made from plastic or steel and is commonly found in corsets, bustiers, and waist cinchers.

Boy Leg Brief

A boy leg brief is a full-coverage panty with short legs that extend to the upper thigh. It provides smooth coverage across the hips and upper thighs and is often used in shapewear.

Boyshort

A boyshort is a low-rise panty inspired by men's boxer briefs. Coverage and leg length vary by design; seamless versions may help reduce visible panty lines.

Bra Cradle

The bra cradle is the portion of the bra frame that surrounds and supports the cups and holds the underwires in position. It helps stabilize the cups and distribute support across the front and lower band of the bra.

Not all bras have a full cradle. Some bras use a partial frame or frameless construction.

Bra Frame

The bra frame is the structural foundation of a bra that supports the cups and connects the band, center panel, and underwire (when present). Depending on the design, the frame may completely surround the cups (full frame) or support only part of them (partial frame or frameless construction).

Bra Size

A bra size consists of two parts: the band size and the cup size. Together, they describe the relationship between the rib cage and breast volume. Because manufacturers use different sizing methods and cup constructions, the same labeled size may fit differently across brands and styles.

Understanding your band size, cup size, breast shape, and sister sizes will greatly improve your chances of finding a comfortable, supportive bra.

Bra Size Neighborhood

A bra size neighborhood is the range of nearby bra sizes that may fit a wearer depending on the brand, style, cup construction, and fabric. Because bra sizing is not completely standardized, a wearer may need slightly different sizes in different bras.

The size neighborhood may include sister sizes as well as adjacent cup sizes.

Bralette

A bralette is a lightly structured bra that is typically wireless and sold in alpha sizing (XS–2XL) and traditional bra sizes. Bralettes generally offer lighter, more flexible support than highly structured bras.

Brazilian Panty

A Brazilian panty offers less back coverage than a bikini but more than a thong, exposing part of the buttocks while maintaining full front coverage. Manufacturers use Brazilian and Tanga terms inconsistently, and the amount of back coverage varies by style.

Breast Base

The breast base is the area where the breast attaches to the chest wall—the breast’s footprint on the chest. Its width and height influence which cup shapes, underwire widths, and bra styles are most likely to fit comfortably.

A breast base may be narrow or wide and short or tall, independent of overall breast volume.

Breast Form

A breast form is an artificial breast designed to restore balance, symmetry, and appearance following mastectomy or other breast surgery. Breast forms are available in a variety of shapes, sizes, weights, and materials, and are typically worn inside the pockets of a mastectomy bra.

Breast Projection

Breast projection is the distance the breast extends forward from the chest wall. A bra cup must provide enough depth to accommodate the wearer’s projection without compressing the breasts or causing the cup to shift downward.

Breast Root

Breast root is an alternate fitting term for the breast base—the area where the breast attaches to the chest wall. HerRoom uses breast base as its preferred term.

Breast Shape

Breathability

Bullet-Proof

Bullet-Proof is a HerRoom term describing a bra with enough cup coverage, lining or padding to prevent nipple show-through beneath clothing.

Bump Pad

Narrow center panels are often preferred by women with close-set breasts.

Center-panel width can influence how well a bra accommodates different breast spacing, depending on the bra's overall design.

Arched center panels provide additional room for women with a high tummy or a shorter torso.

Tall center panels generally provide greater separation and support.

Low center panels are commonly used on plunge bras to accommodate lower necklines.

Charmeuse

Charmeuse is a lightweight fabric woven with a satin weave, creating a smooth, lustrous surface on one side and a duller finish on the reverse. It drapes fluidly and is commonly used in lingerie, slips, robes, chemises, and sleepwear.

Charmeuse may be made from silk or synthetic fibers such as polyester. Silk charmeuse generally feels softer and more breathable, while synthetic charmeuse is typically more affordable and easier to care for.

Chemise

Chenille

A soft, fuzzy fabric developed in France. The name means caterpillar in French.

Chiffon

An extremely sheer, lightweight, soft fabric made of silk, polyester, rayon or other fibers. It is made of highly twisted filament yarns.

Circular Knit

Circular knitting is a manufacturing process that produces seamless tubular fabric. It is commonly used for hosiery, seamless underwear, and knit garments.

Cleavage

Cleavage is the natural line or space between the breasts. Different bra styles can enhance, separate or alter the appearance of cleavage.

Close-Set Breasts

Close-set breasts have little space between them at the sternum. Bras with narrow, low, or flexible center panels—particularly plunge bras—may provide a more comfortable fit than bras with wide center panels.

Combed Cotton

Cotton in which a combing process removes the short fibers and any debris that may be with the fiber when it was in the field. This results in a cleaner, more uniform and lustrous yarn.

Comfort Straps

Comfort straps are wider bra straps that are designed to distribute the weight of the breasts more evenly across the shoulders, reducing pressure and improving all-day comfort. Many comfort straps include soft padding or cushioning at the top of the shoulder to help relieve discomfort caused by heavier breasts.

Comfort straps are especially beneficial for women with fuller busts, but they do not provide the same motion control as restricted stretch straps, which are engineered to minimize breast bounce.

Compression

Compression refers to a garment's ability to apply controlled pressure against the body for support, stability, or shaping. Compression is commonly used in sports bras, athletic apparel, and shapewear.

Compression Bra

A compression bra supports the breasts by holding them firmly against the chest wall to reduce movement during physical activity. Compression bras may be used for low-, medium-, and high-impact exercise.

Compression Garment

A compression garment applies consistent pressure to targeted areas of the body to provide support, improve stability, reduce muscle movement, or create a smoother silhouette. Compression garments are commonly used in sportswear, shapewear, and post-surgical recovery. Medical compression garments should be selected according to a healthcare professional’s instructions.

Contour

The term “contour” refers to bra cups that are molded and shaped with foam. Contour cups hold their shape even when not being worn. They will give lift and support to the breast and sculpt the silhouette. A contour bra can also add definition to the breast, a smooth shape, and elimination of nipple show-through.

Contour Bra

A contour bra features molded foam cups designed to provide a smooth, rounded shape under clothing. Unlike push-up bras, contour bras focus on shaping rather than dramatically increasing cleavage.

Control Brief

Cotton

A natural fiber that grows in the seedpod of the cotton plant. Fibers are typically 1/2 inch to 2 inches long. The longest staple fibers - longer than 1 1/2 inch, including the Pima and Egyptian varieties - produce the highest quality cotton fabrics.

Cotton Lisle

A hard-spun two ply cotton yarn made from long staple fibers and treated to remove all short fuzzy ends for a smooth finish. Lisle is a popular choice for fine men's knitwear, including tops and socks.

Coverage

Coverage describes how much of the breast or body a garment encloses. In bras, coverage varies by style, with full coverage bras enclosing most of the breast, while demi, balconette, plunge, and quarter-cup bras expose progressively more of the upper breast. The amount of coverage affects appearance, support, and compatibility with different necklines.

Another name sometimes used for a coverstitch.

Coverstitch

Crinoline

Originally, it was the name given to coarse horsehair fabric used in early petticoats to give a very full skirt volume. Later, the word crinoline came to be the name for a hoop skirt.

Crop Top/Cami

A crop-top or cami bra is a lightly structured, usually wireless style that combines the coverage of a cropped camisole with light breast support.

Crossover

Cup Gaping

Cup gaping is empty space between the breast and the bra cup, usually along the neckline or upper cup. It may occur when the cup is too large, too tall, too open at the top, or incompatible with the wearer’s breast shape. Loosely adjusted straps or breast tissue that has not been fully positioned inside the cups can also contribute to gaping.

Cup Size

Cup size is the letter portion of a bra size, such as D in 34D. It represents breast volume in relation to the band size rather than an absolute breast size. For example, a 34D and a 38D do not have the same cup volume.

Cup Spillage

Cup spillage occurs when breast tissue extends over the top, sides, or center of the bra cups. It commonly indicates that the cups are too small, too shallow, or otherwise incompatible with the wearer’s breast shape.

Cup Volume

Cup volume is the amount of space contained within a bra cup. Cup volume changes in relation to band size, which is why bras with the same cup letter may hold different amounts of breast tissue.

Cupless Bra

Flatlock Seam

A flatlock seam is butted together so there is no overlap between the two fabric layers. They sit smoothly against the skin and are less likely to chafe or irritate. Flatlock seams are common in intimate and athleticwear because they feel very comfortable against the body.

Floating Center Gore

A floating center gore is a bra center panel that does not rest against the sternum between the breasts. In most properly fitted underwire bras, a floating gore may indicate that the cups are too small, too shallow, or otherwise incompatible with the wearer’s breast shape.

Some bra constructions, including certain minimizers, wire-free bras, and soft-cup styles, are not designed for the center panel to tack firmly against the chest.

Fully Fashioned Stockings

These are vintage style stockings of the 40’s and 50’s, made on the original flat knit machines, where the stocking is knitted flat and sewn together in the back. These stockings are usually knitted of 15 denier 100% nylon yarn, although some of the original vintage styles came on heavier 20 or 30 denier called “service weight” for everyday use. Authentic Fully-Fashioned stockings always have a top welt made by doubling over the top fabric and sewing it back unto itself. A “finishing hole” is always left in the seam in the middle of the top welt, which allows the stocking to fit better on the thigh.

Functional Straps

Functional straps are designed to contribute to the fit and support of a bra or garment. They may be adjustable, convertible, or fixed, depending on the design.

Opera Hose

Peruvian Pima Cotton

Pima cotton that is grown in Peru under excellent growing conditions. This cotton is harvested by hand, which reduces the scratchy impurities and guarantees a more brilliant white shade that can be easily dyed.

Petticoat

A petticoat is an underskirt worn beneath dresses or skirts to add fullness, improve drape, or prevent transparency. Modern petticoats are commonly associated with formalwear, vintage fashion, and bridal attire.

Pima Cotton

Pima cotton is a generic name for extra-long staple (ELS) cotton grown in the U.S., Australia, Peru and is in very limited production in a few other locations around the world. Pima was previously called American-Egyptian cotton but was renamed to honor the Pima Indians who were growing the cotton for the USDA in Sacaton, Arizona. Pima is from the gossypium barbadense species, compared to gossypium hirsutum to which upland cotton belongs. The primary differences between Pima (ELS growths) cotton and upland cotton are staple length and strength of the fiber.

Piqué

A medium-weight fabric, either knit or woven, with raised dobby designs including cords, wales, waffles, or patterns. Woven versions have cords running lengthwise, or in the warp direction. Knitted versions are double-knit fabric constructions, created on multi-feed circular knitting machines.

Plaid

A fabric in which bands of color running horizontally and vertically intersect to form squares. Plaids date back to the 1500's and now come in many patterns from argyle and gingham to madras and windowpane.

Plunge Bra

A plunge bra features a low center panel that creates a deep neckline, making it ideal for low-cut tops and dresses. The angled cups may bring the breasts closer together, but the amount of cleavage depends on the bra and the wearer’s breast shape.

Scallop

Scoop and Swoop

Scoop and swoop is a bra-fitting technique used to position all breast tissue fully inside the cups. After putting on the bra, use the opposite hand to gently scoop tissue from the side and underneath the breast and guide it forward into the cup.

This technique helps reveal whether the cups and underwires fit correctly and can reduce tissue being trapped beneath the band or pushed toward the underarm.

Sister Size

Sister sizing can be helpful when a bra's band feels too tight or too loose while the cups fit well. If you go down one band size, go up one cup letter. If you go up one band size, go down one cup letter.
