3 Quick & Easy Lingerie Tricks Every Woman Should Know

Let’s be honest. I’m busy. You’re busy. We all have things we want to do, and wrestling with lingerie-related wardrobe malfunctions isn’t one of them.

As a dedicated and passionate lingerie insider, I’ve had the opportunity to test out a variety of tricks to fix common lingerie problems over the years. While I’ve found that some tricks work better than others, the real takeaway from my time spent adjusting and tweaking lingerie is that you don’t have to be MacGyver to fix most of your basic lingerie problems at home.

Here are three lingerie tricks to help you banish the most common and seemingly unsolvable lingerie annoyances.

1. Keep your strapless bra from slipping down

We’ve all been there. We put on a strapless bra and look in the mirror to admire how perfectly invisible it is under that favorite party dress or tricky top. But, deep down we know it comes with a price. We’ll either be subtly pulling and tugging it back into place every 20 minutes or it’ll end up around our waists by the end of the night.

If you’re in a bind and you’re stuck with a strapless bra that just won’t stay up, try adding more structure by using its removable straps (most strapless styles come with removable convertible straps).

Take one strap, adjust it to the longest setting, and hook it to the back of the bra on one side. Bring it forward, under your arm, and across the front of your body so it runs under your bustline. Keep wrapping it around and under your other arm until you can hook the other end of the strap to the bra back on the other side. Now, tighten the strap until it feels secure across your rib cage (but not so tight that it’s uncomfortable).

Note: So many women struggle with this issue and assume it’s just a problem you can expect to have with a strapless bra. That’s not true. There are strapless bras that will stay up and in place for long-term wear. Your strapless bra might simply be worn out, you might be in the wrong size, or it may not be high enough quality.

Here are a few tips:

When choosing a strapless bra, look for a style with clear silicone gel or taping along the inside of the bra. This will help it grip to the skin better and stay put.

2. Hide your straps under a racerback tank

If you have a racerback tank or a top with cut-in straps, normal bra straps will peek out from under your shirt. If you don’t own a racerback bra and you’re in a bind, you can use a paperclip or a safety pin to gather your straps in the back and secure them closer to each other.

You can also buy strap clips (like these) to collect your bra straps in the back and pull them together – keeping them hidden under your top.

Note: Every woman should own at least one good racerback (or racerback-capable) bra. Many regular T-shirt or classic bra styles now come with a J-hook in the back – making them convertible to the racerback strap style. Find a variety of racerback bras at HerRoom.

3. Prevent – or stop – stocking runs

If you’re like most women, you sometimes feel like you can’t even step into a pair of pantyhose without getting a run, snag, or a rip – and once it starts, it only gets worse. To take control of this problem, try using hairspray to keep snags from happening in the first place. Once you’ve put on your pantyhose, spray a light coat of hairspray over your legs. Now, wait to let it dry before you put the rest of your clothes on.

In case of emergency (if you do get a hole or a snag in your hosiery while out), you can add a small dab of clear nail polish to the affected spot. This can help prevent it from getting worse.

Note: If you’re buying drugstore pantyhose, you’re likely to get a run every time you wear them. Instead of relying on cheap one-wear wonders, consider investing in some quality hosiery. It may cost a bit more than 99 cents a pair, but you’ll feel the value after you’re able to wear them confidently again, again, and again!
