The caftan, probably one of the most comfortable robe styles, has a venerable history. It was originally a front-buttoned overdress or coat , floor length with long sleeves, worn as a court robe. Associated with Islamic culture for thousands of years, the caftan came into popularity in the 1960's as part of the hippie culture, which embraced ethnic styles. It also became popular as a hostess gown for in-home entertaining.

While you may not want to wear a caftan as women's sleepwear for entertaining these days, the roomy fit and flowing drape make caftans an ideal sleepwear robe. Today's caftan are often ornate prints with wide sleeves and side slits. Made of charmeuse or satin, and closing with a zipper, caftans have an easy at-home elegance combined with world-class comfort.
