Few things exemplify the casual warm weather lifestyle more than "flip flops." Ancient Egyptians wore them, and more recently the Japanese "zori" were brought back by soldiers from WWII to their homelands. Because this shoe style has been around since mankind started wearing footwear, there is no patent. In 2011, 210 million pairs of Havaianas were sold worldwide, with 15 percent exported from Brazil to around 80 countries.

This informal footwear style started gaining steam again at the middle of the twentieth century, in part due to  the development of polyurethane supplying more comfy soles. Havaianas are now one of Brazil's most important exports (alongside the lovely Gisele Bundchen), and rivals soccer and the samba in its popularity. The cushy rubber sole and wishbone thong style are a welcome treat after other confining shoe styles, and the top surface has become a canvas for all kinds of cute prints and patterns, from skulls to florals, stripes and more. The laid-back beach lifestyle of Brazil plays into the ardent daydreams of people everywhere, so it's a "shoe in," so to speak, as footwear for the masses. Rich socialites wear them, stockbrokers don them - even construction workers slip them on for their cushiony comfort.

Havaianas have taken the best of all the aspects of flip flops and turned them into a much sought-after brand that transcends class and economic largesse.  Perfect with swimwear for poolside and beach, perhaps not so much for driving, they continue to delight wearers worldwide.

Havaianas also design colorful, laced canvas sneakers and espadrilles, both with the original flip flop sole, capitalizing on the casual springboard of their original flip flops.   Check back frequently at HerRoom to see our selection of fun, flip-floppy Havaianas
