| The girdle, from the word for 'belt, has a long history as a foundation garment, but really became a craze in the 1920's. The heavy elasticized garment encircled the torso, creating a rigidly controlled figure. Modern firm control girdles create shape and provide control using a combination of knit fabrics, contour bands and spot control. Some styles today still use boning, an open bottom and hook-and-eye closures, reminiscent of corsets. Many styles are really firm control shapewear, with legs to shape and firm the thighs. Other popular firm control girdle styles include waist cinchers, high waist briefs that smooth the entire torso, and briefs with extra control for tummy and a little lift for the derriere. |
